Last Minute Trade Show Booth Costs?
My company is thinking about exhibiting at a trade show 'last minute' meaning 2 weeks before signing up for a space etc. Do these spaces normally cost more or less because they are last minute? There are a few open spots but I am not sure if they charge premium or discount for last minute exhibitors.

- I've worked many shows in Las Vegas, Florida, SF, and Texas. I'm not aware of the prices going up as opening day approaches. We always signed up as early as possible to get the site(s) we preferred. Prices going up is not the issue for you. Either what they're charging is worth it to you from a business perspective, or it isn't. This should be a financial decision, not an emotional one.
- I've attended quite a few trade shows as an exhibitor and I can say definitively that you won't be getting a deal if you don't ask for one. If they are sold out they will tell you, if they are not then you have the advantage in the negotiation.
- Like any product that sells space & only exists for a limited time (for example advertising space in newspapers and magazines) any thing left unsold is lost revenue. You can ALWAYS negotiate for a discount at that point. Trade show space is a little tricky because you need to have materials to fill the space/exhibit or you'll have wasted your money regardless of how cheaply you got it (or worse damage your reputation among potential clients because your booth is shabby). If, however, you have a quality stand ready to go and you can be ready at a moment notice you could try this.... Offer than a very low (but still realistic) price and tell them that it's a firm offer if they can get a better price than that by the time the show opens call you and you'll fill the space. Used to work for me when I was buying "short term" space in national newspapers for my clients.
- They will negotiate to fill their booth slots. Do not act desperate.
